A Day of Hope for Diabetes®
Far beyond what the name implies, A Day of Hope for Diabetes® offers more than just a promise of optimism for those affected with diabetes and their families — it affords a wealth of vital education and inspiration, flanked by a day-long Product Fair that features the newest and best products to help people with diabetes better manage their illness and their lives.
The event also features 14 hours of classroom education including topics such as,“New Medications and Innovations for Type 2 and Type 1” and “The Heart and Diabetes.” This year, we will also be offering a Spanish language program led by Eisenhower’s Carlos Lopez, MD.
This 11th A Day of Hope for Diabetes® presents two inspirational speakers. Nicole Johnson Baker, Miss America 1999, who has Type 1 diabetes, promotes diabetes awareness, prevention and early detection as an international advocate/spokesperson, author, journalist, lobbyist and advisor. Nicole has helped raise over $16 million for diabetes research. In 2005, she was named the first Ambassador for the International Diabetes Federation’s Life for a Child Program, which advocates for children with diabetes in developing countries around the world.
Another inspirational speaker is Douglas Cairns, the author of Dare to Dream. Douglas, who has Type 1 diabetes, flew his own aircraft around the world. His remarkable story looks at his life as a young RAF (Royal Air Force) flight officer who acquired diabetes overnight, and what he learned about people affected with diabetes the world over.
Included in this special day of activities will be our foot, eye, and heart screenings. These services are free to members in good standing of the Desert Diabetes Club. Anyone who wishes to join the Club is invited to do so. A one-year membership is only $20.
Remember, A Day of Hope for Diabetes® is free and open to the public, as it has been from our first A Day of Hope for Diabetes® venture in March 1996.
