In this Healthy Living, you will meet Yvonne Hawk, who traveled from Kansas City, Missouri, to find help at Eisenhower. Mrs. Hawk had a variety of places to choose from when diagnosed with breast cancer last March, but nowhere in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, with a population of nearly two million people, could she find the state-of-the-art MammoSiteTM Radiation Therapy System for her treatment. So, Mrs. Hawk came to the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center for treatment. She is now cancer free, and “feeling better than ever.”
Healthy Living also assembled four prominent Eisenhower physicians – Monica Khanna, MD, Farhad Limonadi, MD,Alfred Shen, MD and Philip Shaver, MD – to discuss, in depth, another new technology offered only at the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center – Stereotactic Radiosurgery. This amazing technology, which provides treatment without an incision, uses highly focused, extremely precise beams of radiation to treat cancer in the brain and spine. In this issue’s “Physicians Roundtable,” these Eisenhower physicians explain just how it works, and the role of Stereotactic Radiosurgery in the multi-faceted spectrum of treatment options available at Eisenhower.
Also in this issue, Healthy Living highlights the Eisenhower employees who traveled to Waveland, Mississippi, to help t h e survivors of Hurricane Katrina. In “Tour of Duty,” you will find stories of survival, of a mission called “Camp Katrina,” of Eisenhower extending itself to those in need, reaching beyond the borders of the Coachella Valley. I could not be more proud of Eisenhower Medical Center and the courageous spirits of these members of Eisenhower’s staff.
Please enjoy this Healthy Living! Be well, and know that we are here for you.
Yours in good health,
G. Aubrey Serfling President and Chief Executive Officer Eisenhower Medical Center
