Whole-breast ultrasound has been called a new frontier in breast imaging. It’s an advanced way of imaging the breast that improves the detection and diagnosis of breast abnormalities through better visualization of breast tissue…and it’s now available at the Eisenhower Schnitzer/Novack Breast Center at the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center — thanks to the many donors who support BIGHORN Behind A Miracle.

“As the name implies, with whole-breast ultrasound,we can look at the entire breast instead of just small portions of the breast,” says Radiologist John Cutrone,MD,Medical Director, Eisenhower Schnitzer/Novack Breast Center. “With traditional ultrasound, the sonographer utilizes a hand-held device to image small portions of the breast. But by looking at the entire area,we’re more apt to detect potential problems because we can see more.”

“It also automates the acquisition of images,” continues Dr. Cutrone.“This removes operator variability and reduces the potential for error. It enables us to scan patients with dense breast tissue usually present in younger women.”

While X-ray mammography is the gold standard for breast imaging, it has its limitations,Dr. Cutrone explains, especially in women with dense breasts or breast implants, which makes detecting small lesions more difficult.“For these patients, whole-breast ultrasound can be an important adjunct to mammography,” notes Dr. Cutrone, emphasizing that this new modality is not a replacement for screening mammography. On the recommendation of the radiologist or the referring physician, whole-breast ultrasound can be used as a screening tool. Patients with suspicious findings on mammography can undergo whole-breast ultrasound to further characterize any lesions, and help the radiologist determine what additional diagnostic procedures might be appropriate.

Another distinct advantage of whole-breast ultrasound is that the system delivers images that can be evaluated in three dimensions, including what’s called a coronal view. This refers to its ability to look at the breast in “slices” from the nipple all the way to the chest wall, giving a more comprehensive and easily understandable picture of the entire breast anatomy that is particularly helpful in surgical planning.

The ultimate value of this leading-edge technology is its impact on patient care. According to a study published by the Radiological Society of North America in 2002, the detection rate for non-palpable (unable to be felt), invasive breast cancer increased by 42 percent when mammography was followed by an ultrasound examination. This new technology promises even greater diagnostic confidence.

The whole-breast ultrasound scanner that Eisenhower acquired is the Siemens Acuson S2000™, an industry-leading manufacturer of diagnostic imaging equipment.

“BIGHORN Behind A Miracle golf tournament founder Selby Dunham received her breast cancer treatment at Eisenhower,” explains Dr. Cutrone.“She feels strongly that tournament proceeds stay in the valley to help our community. We are extremely fortunate to offer this cutting-edge technology and that BIGHORN Golf Club members have been so incredibly supportive of Eisenhower over the years.”

NEW EISENHOWER BREAST CENTER COMING TO PALM SPRINGS

The same high-quality, high-tech services for screening and diagnostic mammography that are available at Eisenhower Breast Centers in Rancho Mirage and La Quinta will soon be offered in Palm Springs.

“Our goal is to provide the same excellent service to people in the west end of the Valley,” says Kim Von Haden, RN, Manager of the Eisenhower Breast Centers. “This includes ease in scheduling, a convenient location, fast service, state-of-the-art equipment and a beautiful facility.”

Slated to open in early 2011, the new Eisenhower Schnitzer/Novack Breast Center in Palm Springs will be located at the corner of Sunrise and Tahquitz. You can schedule an appointment at our current breast centers by calling 760-773-4338.
