March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States but it is also one of the most preventable types of cancer. Early detection means early treatment — early stage colon cancer is one of the most curable cancers.
Colonoscopies are recommended for people 50 and older as an important means of detecting polyps and other cancerous or benign growths in the colon. People with a family history of colon cancer should also consult with a gastroenterologist.
