Physician of the Month March 2012

Barry Hackshaw, MD

Dr. Hackshaw demonstrates professional excellence when caring for his patients. He is noted to go above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis.

Recently, a patient with acute renal insufficiency, systolic CHF secondary to cardiomyopathy, severe aortic stenosis and an ejection fraction of less than 20% was admitted to 4 North. This patient had profound hypotension and CHF managed by Dopamine and Lasix drip. The patient was Dopamine dependent and unable to sit with his head greater than 45 degrees or his blood pressure dropped less than 80 systolic. The cure for this patient was an aortic valve replacement; however, he was not a surgical candidate. The future was looking very grim for this very alert and oriented 80 year old gentleman. Dr. Hackshaw began researching possible treatment plans and asked if the patient would consider a procedure that had never been performed at Eisenhower. The procedure was an aortic valvuloplasty which required special permission to perform. Cindy Olson and her team began working on obtaining the necessary balloons and equipment immediately on Friday afternoon. All was set to go early Monday morning. By Wednesday this patient was sitting up in a chair and able to ambulate with a walker in his room. He and his wife were ever so grateful for the extra efforts put forth to save his life.

Without Dr. Hackshaw’s caring, kindness, professionalism and initiative this patient’s future would be nonexistent as we speak!
