  • John Dee Stansell, MD, is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. An HIV Specialist through the American Academy of HIV Medicine, Dr. Stansell is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and served for four years as acting chief and 13 years as medical director for the Positive Health Program (UCSF HIV Services) at San Francisco General Hospital.

    Dr. Stansell received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, and his Doctor of Medicine from George Washington University, Washington, DC. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Stanford University Medical Center. He performed his Fellowship in Pulmonary Disease at UCSF.

    Honors for Dr. Stansell include: the Leadership Award, American Academy of HIV Medicine; Heroes in Medicine Award, International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care; Henry J. Kaiser Teaching Award Nominee (3 years), UCSF; Alec Horowitz Award for Achievement in Surgery, George Washington University Medical School (GWUMS); Benjamin Manchester Award for Humanitarianism, GWUMS; John Ordronaux Award for Highest Academic Average, GWUMS, and the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Fellowships.

    Dr. Stansell is the author and co-author of numerous medical journal articles and textbooks. He has also authored and co-authored dozens of presentations on HIV-related topics nationally and internationally.

    “It was volunteering at the Washington, DC Free Clinic during my graduate school days that convinced me I needed to make an abrupt career change,” says Dr. Stansell. “Almost overnight, my enthusiasm for studying small molecule signaling and cell differentiation changed to a burning desire to advance health care for my community. Medicine became a passion, not an option. Not a day in the past thirty years have I awakened without that same fervor for patient care. I am now and have always been enormously grateful for this opportunity.”
