    • For Kellie Flippin, MD, a fellowship-trained medical oncologist and hematologist, working in cancer care was always going to be a part of her story. From an early age, Dr. Flippin was introduced to the field of medicine by her father, a hematologist, and her mother who worked as a surgical nurse. “I was always around hospitals growing up and felt very comfortable in that setting.”

After earning her undergraduate degree in biology/chemistry, she chose to enter medical school instead of furthering her skills as a scientist. “While my initial interest was in biology, I felt my personality would be better suited for a career in medicine. Specifically, direct patient care would give the opportunity firsthand to help
people.” She earned her medical degree from the University of Rochester
School of Medicine and completed her residency at Strong Memorial Hospital
at University of Rochester Medical Center.

Dr. Flippin completed her fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at
Duke University Medical Center where she also earned the Sterling L. Davison
Fellow. After completing postdoctoral training, Dr. Flippin began working in
the field of cancer care at Duke University Medical Center — also serving as
assistant professor of medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine
      in North Carolina.

Dr. Flippin is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Society of Clinical
Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, a Fellow of the American
Board of Physicians in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology
      and the Piedmont Oncology Association.

To want to help people get better is an innate part of who I am. I want to do
anything I can to alleviate a patient’s suffering. And, if I’ve achieved that, then
it’s a win-win for the patient and for me
      .”
