Multiple Sclerosis
Eisenhower Medical Center is proud to offer specialized care for numerous health concerns, including Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. Symptoms of MS vary from patient to patient and can change over time. Many of the symptoms can be managed with medication, rehabilitation and other treatment strategies.
Symptoms may include:
- Fatigue - one of the most common symptoms among people with MS
- Balance and coordination concerns
- Bladder and/or bowel dysfunction
- Vision concerns - the onset of blurring, double vision, eye pain or poor contrast is often one of the first symptoms of MS for many people
- Pain
- Depression
Individualized care is a vital component of treatment for each MS patient. With the availability of numerous medications and a number of complementary or alternative therapies, people with MS may want to consult with a physician who specializes in MS about the choices they want to make and how various drugs and therapies may interact.
